My grandfather, who we affectionately called "Big Daddy," always said,

"If you don't open your mouth, no one will know you're stupid."

He was also fond of saying to people who proclaimed they loved him but there was no evidence of it:

" I can't hear what you're saying for seeing what you're doing."
